  2. Details: Black Drum

The pharyngeal teeth of a black drum, used to crack crustaceans, mollusks and such when they're sucked into the mouth. I'm told they're about 7 pharyngeal ...more slits down, and I'm sure most of the fisherman who catch the drum recognize this structure pretty well. Unfortunately, all of the molar-like "teeth" fell out of mine and now I mostly just have the pad. I still love it though!

    1. Chris Skinner 0
      Very neat
    2. SoniaD 0
      @jruss Anytime!
    3. Jeff Russell 0
I thought it was a some kind of weird frog too. Lol. Thanks for the info and lesson.
    4. SoniaD 0
@MulletHead Heck yeah I'm looking forward to it then!
    5. Gabe Mitchell 0
Ha, took me a second to see the frog. Next you need to catch a sheepshead, a mako and then a stargazer to continue your studies interesting fish mouths.
    6. SoniaD 0
Everyone has said to me that it looks like a frog though as well
    7. SoniaD 0
@MulletHead Thanks! A professor of mine who I consider to be a mentor is an ichthyologist & he gave me a little more info on it. I got it at the island from ...more a friend after I caught my first black drum
    8. gr82bstr8 0
      @j_reyes read the description bro
    9. j_reyes 0
what is that it looks creepy lol from this angle it kind of looks like a frog

  3. Just one more to remember the fun bare-handed catch I had ;)

    1. bad_bass 0
Well usually only meat eating animals get rabies that's the biggest cause for animals getting rabies is my eating nasty meat
    2. SoniaD 0
      @MrPopular Oh how fun! :)
    3. MrPopular 0
Congrats! You made it on the popular page on May 01, 2014!
    4. SoniaD 0
But only warm-blooded animals carry rabies for example, so at least it won't give you rabies! I'm not even sure birds really get rabies, maybe only mammals.
    5. SoniaD 0
@PKfisherman A diamondback water snake. They're harmless, yes, with the exception of an unfortunate bacterial infection upon getting bitten or something of course.
    6. PKfisherman 0
      What's DBWS?
    7. Swamp Mafia 0
      Yes. DBWS !
    8. SoniaD 0
@Saltyhank Thank ya. And @SwampMafia it is for sure one? Yeah that would have been a real bummer if it had been venomous or something.. Lol
    9. Swamp Mafia 0
      Its a DBWS.
    10. Saltyhank 0
Get some rest buddy, or study. Lol. Can't wait for ur next post.
    11. Saltyhank 0
      200? oh snap!
    12. SoniaD 0
But I heard people are always killing them since they mistake their identity. So, I'm definitely going to catch one and dissect it but then I won't kill ...more anymore lol
    13. SoniaD 0
@Saltyhank Honestly like if I can't handle the bite then you can handle the bite (right?!), so there's no point in killing it or anything, they're so ...more skittish anyways. And super kewww
    14. SoniaD 0
When we went out we estimate there were more than 200 just that we saw, and in one spot 4 were laying on each other on a log too. They're everywhere
    15. SoniaD 0
@amassie I believe it's a diamondback water snake, but I could be wrong. I'm like 89% (?) positive though that it's a type of DB water snake. People ...more mistake them for rattlers & cottonmouths a lot
    16. Saltyhank 0
Oh heck no. I luv to fish but, can't do snakes. I was kayaking the other day and seen one cruising by about 25 yards from me. Just kept my eye on him but still ...more creepy. That abd spiders....heck no..
    17. mredus8 0
I had one climb in my friends boat one night
    18. tunatoker8910 0
Jus a bite or few no big deal huh. Ha. Nice! @SoniaD
    19. amassie 0
      What kind is that?
    20. Swamp Mafia 0
Yea, I know how that goes.
    21. gr82bstr8 0
Great pic๐Ÿ‘ looks like he gave you a nasty hickey lol
    22. SoniaD 0
@SwampMafia Lol yes it did. I had to grab a little further down behind its head when it tried to dart off, but I really wanted the snake & it was just a bite ...more or a few so no big deal haha
    23. whitebass_81 0
      Pop page, i'm calling it.
    24. Roger Connolly 0
      Haha, awesome pic.
    25. Swamp Mafia 0
Looks like it tagged your wrist. That's hardcore grabbin'
    26. View full conversation
  4. Careful, they'll bite'cha! It's only bacteria ;)... Leaning out of the boat and catching it with my bare hands was worth it though. (I barely grabbed ...more too low past the head since he tried to dart off, but a cleaned bite from a non-venomous snake isn't the worst thing that can happen on a fishing trip. Better that than a hook through the finger any day)!

@Smok3_All That's funny, I think I always get closer when I see any type of animal, not further away, & if something touches me in the dark that I can't ...more see & I'm scared, yes I do scream like a beast
    5. SoniaD 0
      We'll thank ya @WhiteLightning89
    6. Smok3_All 0

@SoniaD I don't think you're weirdo at all, the exact opposite actually
    8. SoniaD 0

    12. SoniaD 0
Haha ok thank you! @Saltyhank It's definitely fun to catch the snakes. I still haven't dissected one yet but I will! If this is actually the diamondback ...more water snake, they give birth to live young :)
    13. Saltyhank 0
      Got more balls than me!
    14. gr82bstr8 0
Informative or descriptive information in the post.....lol and sure, I'll let ya know if we can still see your house haha
    15. gr82bstr8 0

    16. SoniaD 0
@gr82bstr8 I'm gonna be honest, I still see pins, and green check marks, on some of my photos and I have no idea what they mean. If someone is still able to ...more kidnap me please let me know lol
    17. SoniaD 0
Oh crap! Haha thank you! I don't know how the app works yet so I had a feeling I was doing that wrong lol! That's pretty funny and terribly bad..
    18. gr82bstr8 0
Tough girl haha...btw, make sure to edit your posts & either turn off the location or drop the pin wherever you caught it. You don't want people creepin ...more at your house lol๐Ÿ˜œ

      Oops, I can't say h-e-l-l?
    21. SoniaD 0
@SwampMafia That was fun as hell I really like to do stuff like that! The bites don't bother me & cuts & bruises lead to fun stories & it's cool ...more to explore the animal up close like that. So I love it

    8. SoniaD 0
@IowaAnglers I agree, & my professor also says they CAN actually be prepared & taste very very good, although it takes work. And trust me he'd know! ...more Plus, it's just an incredibly engineered fish!
    9. Joe Olsem 0
It is very neat!!! It doesn't matter to me either wether or not a fish is considered a trash fish. "One man's trash is another man's treasure". ...more They all r gems to me. I will catch'em all๐Ÿ˜Š.

Oh and also her ovaries were huge and bursting with eggs so we did do Texas a favor and take them out and look and them under the microscope too, so, no baby pleco ...more from her!
    11. SoniaD 0
@IowaAnglers Thank you for the invite! Isn't that neat looking? I didn't expect the scale of what everyone calls a trash fish to look so cool up close. It's ...more not a trash fish to me anymore though :)

  9. Is anyone able to say if these are some type of thread fin shad or a different species?

    1. Chris Skinner 0
100% positive on threadfin shad, the warm water at Calaveras and Braunig causes them to have brighter colors, too bad y'all didn't catch any rio grande cichlids, ...more or tilapia too
    2. SoniaD 0
@bmftom I am totally going to do that, that's a great idea, thanks!
    3. bmftom 0
If you have a small seine, go to the coast and drag it through the grasses along the shore. We have caught so much awesome stuff there. Pipefish, blennies, sea horses, ...more etc. @SoniaD
    4. SoniaD 0
@bmftom We just lost our minds when we saw these come up in the cast net. They are so pretty. In our aquatic bio department the 3 grad students and our professor ...more all actually love darters oddly
    5. bmftom 0
Well at least there are other people that are as weird as me when it comes to fish and fishing. Haha. I could read about shad all day. @SoniaD
    6. SoniaD 0
They are aquatic biology grad students and are avid fisherman and obviously know a lot on the topic, & my professor has his doctorate in ichthyology so I was ...more torn when we didn't get a positive ID lol
    7. SoniaD 0
@bmftom Thank you, we looked it up in our book and based on the description we also thought threadfin shad, but yesterday in the lab a bunch of guys & my professor ...more were arguing over the positive ID
    8. bmftom 0
in their fins and the jaw, but the spot placement and yellowing is a good indication. @SoniaD
    9. bmftom 0
They look like threadfin. I can't see really well on my phone, but the spot on the side is usually higher on a threadfin than a gizzard shad. There are other ...more small differences in the number of spines
    10. SoniaD 0
      Thanks @gr82bstr8 :)
