100% positive on threadfin shad, the warm water at Calaveras and Braunig causes them to have brighter colors, too bad y'all didn't catch any rio grande cichlids, ...more or tilapia too
If you have a small seine, go to the coast and drag it through the grasses along the shore. We have caught so much awesome stuff there. Pipefish, blennies, sea horses, ...more etc. @SoniaD
@bmftom We just lost our minds when we saw these come up in the cast net. They are so pretty. In our aquatic bio department the 3 grad students and our professor ...more all actually love darters oddly
They are aquatic biology grad students and are avid fisherman and obviously know a lot on the topic, & my professor has his doctorate in ichthyology so I was ...more torn when we didn't get a positive ID lol
@bmftom Thank you, we looked it up in our book and based on the description we also thought threadfin shad, but yesterday in the lab a bunch of guys & my professor ...more were arguing over the positive ID
They look like threadfin. I can't see really well on my phone, but the spot on the side is usually higher on a threadfin than a gizzard shad. There are other ...more small differences in the number of spines
Why thank you! I'm a wildlife biology major so when I go fishing I get really into the science aspect of things as well, and I found these to be particularly ...more interesting :)
