  1. Details: Skate

Well I tried to go after some drum in the surf this morning a failed miserably. I caught 11 skates total though, they would hit any baits I had out within minutes, ...more including cut skate that I tried throwing for a shark! Couldn't catch any live bait, only skates. Had one good hit on peeler crabs but didn't get to it fast enough. If anyone has good tips to catching drum in the surf lets here them!

@Drew72 honestly I think I just need to find someone near here to come show me the tricks and methods to get them.
    2. Sean Wilms 0
@crookcody19 speaking which are we good to fish again in three weeks
    3. crookcody19 0
Santee cooper rig is something you could learn from me!
    4. Drew72 0
Might need some minor mods to deal with tide and current @seaturtles @tacticalscissors
    5. Drew72 0
Looks different than mine, but should work OK
    6. Drew72 0
Not a catfisherman by trade, so had to look that rig up
    7. Sean Wilms 0
@Drew72 I'll be fishing at least once a week down there, just gotta figure it out how to sneak some gear into a dorm
    8. Sean Wilms 0
@tacticalscissors gotcha well il have to look into it. I'm not sure if the bait or rigs or the problem. I just simply don't know where to cast the bait or ...more what conditions are best
    9. tacticalscissors 0
There's a catfish rig called the santee cooper rig which is basically what @Drew72 is explaining. People use it for big blue cats, but it'll work in the ...more surf I'm sure.

      *not finding time...
    11. Drew72 0
Have fun at prom. I can't see you being in FL and finding some time to wet a line πŸ€” I'd actually bet $$ on it! πŸ‘Š
    12. Sean Wilms 0
But I'll be after them a lot if I can find time in Florida over the winter
    13. Sean Wilms 0
@Drew72 no sir, bad weather untill middle of next week, plus tomorrow is prom so my day is kinda filled up. I'll hopefully be out there a lot this summer, I ...more may have missed the drum run this spring
    14. Drew72 0
In that case, yuck! You trying again over the weekend?
    15. Sean Wilms 0
Fish on bottom rigs and they can give you an arm wrenching pull on that in the surf but when they hit on my heavers they just come in like a plastic bag full of ...more sand, pretty boring
    16. Sean Wilms 0
@Drew72 skates are like hardheads. They are a pain to get off the hook and they are both nuisances that can hurt you if you aren't careful. I caught a few on ...more my medium action rod for catching bait
    17. Drew72 0
Did they put up a decent fight on the gear you had on the beach?
    18. Drew72 0
I've never fished anywhere with skate numbers like you're dealing with. At least you're catching?!
    19. Drew72 0
Pulled out my box of parts and built one. On version 3.0 now and am happy with it
    20. Drew72 0
I put a swivel in to attach the weight so I can add a spider weight for the surf. Was one of those things where I was frustrated at losing gear and couldn't ...more find anything on the market.
    21. Sean Wilms 0
Oh I gotcha. And it holds well enough in the surf. I've never seen anyone use something like that before @Drew72
    22. Drew72 0

I originally designed a rig for fishing oyster beds because I was tired of getting cut off. I use it in a bunch of conditions now, including the surf. Basically ...more a fish finder rig with a slip bobber by

@Drew72 skates are here year round I just think I hit it during good skate conditions whatever that is. How do you float bait in the surf?
    25. Drew72 0
Never had the skate problem, but when hardheads are around, I'll float the bait about a foot off the bottom. Don't know if that would work for skates or ...more not...
    26. Drew72 0
Sounds like you were fishing in the middle of a skate migration. I've had good luck with surf drum using whole or cracked crab, shrimp and mullet

I thought you guys would get a kick out of the fact that I was wearing my FC shirt during some of my senior photos. I have some pictures of me surf fishing at fort ...more story, some infront of and beneath sandbridge pier, with my truck (with FC pro team sticker) and my dog, some fly fishing, kayaking, and cast net throwing at Stumpy Lake, as well as some family photos at the Stumpy Lake dock.

Mom showed me up today. She loves the beach and tends to accompany me out to make sure I don't get eaten. Crabs were super thick, caught 3 of them on my lines ...more and live bait was the only way to have a chance at a fish. Caught a lot of pompano, Roundhead, and sand trout. Only small sharks taking, this one being the biggest of the day. Two of my poles went of at once and wether she wanted to or not

else still had a great day. 93 air temp, 12mph N wind, 1-2ft swells, deep water right off the edge, clearish water, lots of Dolphins but not a lot of baitfish.
    12. Sean Wilms 0
She had to take one of them. Mine spit the hook in the surf but she fought and landed this one like a pro. I even made her hold it. All of my fish were small and ...more unpicture worthy. Oh well, someone

This was the second shark of the day, a bit longer and much thicker then the first also gave me an impressive fight. I had just casted out the fish and was walking ...more away to setup my other pole when I looked back and realized I forgot to loosen the drag as my pole went flying toward the water. Thankfully I managed to get it quickly and fight and land the shark but it was a close call. Was a very

Oh yeah, have lost many a reel to the sand and saltwater. Good luck getting it cleaned up!
    2. Sean Wilms 0
Ya but the first without the other results in endless frustration @matt the reel makes sand noises now but it still brought the fish in and a little shower will ...more hopefully fix that
    3. Matt Dobson 0
Looks awesome out. Always fun when your rod goes flying AND you get it back in time to land fish.

    5. Sean Wilms 0
Slow day likely because of an annoying sandbar that formed about 80 yards off the beach. the surrounding water must have been to shallow for big fish and small Roundhead ...more was all I could get for bait.

First take if the day after hours of soaking and replacing bait from crabs. Everything that could have gone right did and this little 38" sandbar flight very ...more impressively for its size, even on the ambassador 7000. I had been praying to hear that clicker and put something worth my time in the sand. Wish they were bigger but a fun fight and a cool fish leaves me with no complaints.

Surf fishing again today to end the week, only had two takes and hooked up to both. this was the first shark to take and the slightly larger one at 44". I apologize ...more about the pic, cropping to fit in the app was an issue and my sister takes bad photos. Didn't fight too hard for it's size, only one good run, had him in pretty quickly. still love catching medium size sharks especially in the surf.

    1. Sean Wilms 0
Every time I go, you just got to have persistence and know how to catch them.
    2. Sean Wilms 0
@tmhenslee chumming is actually illegal in tidal waters of Virginia, only offshore boats and some piers allow that. Fort Story just has a lot of sandbar sharks around ...more and I catch at least one almost
    3. tmhenslee 0
Do you chum, fort story loaded with sharks, or you just lucky to keep getting them there??
    4. Hunter Hill 0

    5. Sean Wilms 0
Would be able to handle a stingray if you happen to hook up with one because those suckers can pull @fisherfly7

    7. Sean Wilms 0
I caught this one a med-heavy 9' surf rod. Any pole grade medium or above will work fine for these smaller sharks but if the swells are high you might have a ...more hard time keeping your line out of the

This was the second shark I caught today and the smaller one at 38". Fought impressively hard for its size, I thought it was going to be much larger but I was ...more fooled. Gave 3 very hard runs and I had to weave through all my poles, luckily no tangles. I love just hearing the clicker on my feel sing. Wading and then casting as far as possible off the beach to try and get out of reach of crabs.

probably my second biggest shark I have ever caught today, fishing in the surf off Fort Story. Soaking a large roundhead chunk about 100 yards off the beach with ...more a great cast. I turned around and saw my pole doubled over and drag screaming. Didn't fight great, thought it was a smaller eat until I beached it and was so excited. Had only my sister with me and she wasn't much help in the whole

Another shot of my shark I caught today, please see previous blert for information. Also had one other very good run today on the big whitings head but the line ...more broke as soon as I engaged the reel, I have no clue why as the drag wasn't tight at all, might have week braid. Only had two pulls all day as the crabs were literally everywhere, would step on a few everytime I went out to wade.

A lot of blue crabs and Roundheads in the water today, not much of anything else. Was catching a bunch of small Roundheads for bait although not much was hitting ...more them on a Sabiki rig which I prefer to cast out over a bottom rig if the surf conditions are right and this big 15" Roundhead hit out of no where like a freight train, I honestly thought I had a puppy drum on, good fight too, better bait.
