      Thanks Stan! Burbot are actually really easy to catch. I've only ever targeted them out on Keweenaw Bay, but from mid to late February through March they come ...more up to 30-60 feet to spawn. Pretty much anywhere in those depths is productive. After dark provides the best action. I like to use a large rattling spoon tipped with a generous piece of smelt and pound the bottom with it. Glow in the dark lures are also effective. For line you can just use straight braid for the sensitivity or whatever you want, they aren't line shy at all.

      Thanks Morris! No better time than the present! Right now they're getting ready to spawn. ive been getting them within a short walk from shore in 40 to 50 feet ...more of water. Just pound the bottom after dark with a heavy spoon and a piece of smelt and it's pretty much guaranteed success.

    I've wanted to catch these guys forever and finally got my chance last night! Iced 4 solid burbot on tipups in between smelt fishing. Am I the only one who thinks ...more they're not ugly at all?😂

      Stan, this was out in front of the Falls River. The shallow splake bite seems to have died with all the snow we've been getting, I haven't been on the Bay ...more in over a month now. Hoping for some warm fronts to get rid of the slush out there so I can walk out there again!

    I love ice fishing because it gives me a chance to target species I might otherwise never try for. Some buddies and I caught about 50 smelt through the ice on panfish ...more rods last night. It's good to be well rounded, multi species angler. Even if you have a favorite species to target, it's often smart to take a break and try something different. It gives you a different perspective on the food chain and ecosystem and might open your eyes to alternate strategies for the species you like to target most. I'm looking forward to trying this again!

    Took this picture of a school of hundreds of fish below my hole. They were suspended in the water column anywhere from 5 to 15 feet off the bottom. Does anyone know ...more if these are whitefish or Menominee or Cisco??

    I fished Lake Superior for burbot this evening. The fishing was really slow. I ended up catching only two fish. This one came on a tip up with a piece of cut smelt.

    I caught this guy just as it was getting dark on a tip up. The best way I've found for tip up fishing for burbot is to use a single treble hook, and put one ...more minnow on each hook point (three total). I place a split shot a foot or two up the line, and then let the entire rig lay right on the bottom. After it hits bottom I let out a couple more feet.
