1. Details: Largemouth Bass with a 1" tube jig tricolor (black, blue, white) with small split shots a foot above

caught this nice little 1-2 pounder at sand hallow today. Conditions were very nice; clear skies, temp 75, water temp around 65, water very clear at around 5 ft ...more vis. I caught this one letting the jig sink then alternating between twitching and reeling rapidly.

  2. I have one more question about those of you who have had experience with Cabela's line up of fly rods. They have a really good deal on their RLS+ combo (1/2 ...more off), and I'm looking at purchasing it. Just want to know how their rods compare to some well liked brands like sage, orvis, g-loomis, redington, etc.

    1. King_Fisher 0
Cabelas rods are a great deal!
    2. zac9098 0
Seriously I have a lot of their stuff it's amazing for the price
    3. JMrock7 0
      ok sweet, thanks @TheFishMan22 @zac9098
    4. zac9098 0
Cabelas are actually quite nice, another option is Allen fly fishing. They're cheaper stuff Is amazing
    5. TheFishMan22 0
Cast better and make good deliveries with. Depending on the price you should do some looking around. @JMrock7
    6. TheFishMan22 0
Orvis Rods and Reels are really great I have a Cabelas Cahill 4/5/6 it's a nicereel and you can mix and match lines for it I like Cabela gear but it's really ...more an opinion of taste what you think you can

  3. I'm wondering what rod power and length I should get for my lews speed spool mg. I will be using a wide variety of baits including frogs, spinner baits, buzz ...more baits, crank baits, and minnows. I will be mainly catching bass, but I will also possibly be using it for other bigger fish (catfish, trout, wiper, etc.) I would also like to know if anyone has experience with the berkley lightening rod shock

      Kk
    2. JMrock7 0
ok haha maybe, but I got to say, Cabelas has some sweet deals right now @UtahBass
    3. jake calkin 0
      I'll be open 12-6pm
    4. jake calkin 0
Come into the fly shop I work at this Friday! It's called mickeyfinns it's on Main Street in kaysville. I might be able to get you a discount and I'll ...more make sure it's a sweet setup.
    5. JMrock7 0
for line weight, length, backing amount, etc. @UtahBass
    6. JMrock7 0
also planning on maybe getting a fly rod, and I assume you know quite a bit about that. I want a fairly nice one too, and I'm wondering some brand recommendations ...more you have, and what a good medium is
    7. JMrock7 0
ok sweet, think I'll stick with that @UtahBass
    8. jake calkin 0
If I were going to have only 1 baitcast setup if go with a 7' med heavy fast action 6.3:1 reel 16lb copolymer
    9. jake calkin 0
Oh and for cranks I use fiberglass rods instead of graphite. But graphite for everything else.
    10. jake calkin 0
But for weighted Texas rigs I'll throw them on either my 7' med fast, or my 7' med heavy fast, or my 7'3 heavy fast depending on lure weight and ...more how strong of a hook I'm using.
    11. JMrock7 0
thanks for the info, I think I'm decided on a mh 7' for a good average @UtahBass
    12. jake calkin 0
Spinnerbaits I usually just use a 7' med fast action or med heavy fast action depending on the weight of the lure. And for senkos it depends on the weight. Unweighted ...more I use my 7' med fast spinning rod
    13. jake calkin 0
Frogs 7'3-7'6 heavy fast action. For lipless and heavier cranks 7'6 med heavy moderate. Lighter cranks that i don't need to feel my way through structure ...more as much I use a 7' med moderate.
    14. JMrock7 0
what rod(s) do you use for frogs, spinner baits, crank baits, and weighted sinkos as far as length and power goes? @UtahBass @jonholbrook
    15. JMrock7 0
ok sweet, and I won't be taking anything to saltwater anytime soon, thanks for the advice! @lukerevere7
    16. lukerevere7 0
      Big fish
    17. lukerevere7 0
Do not I repeat do not take a Lews into saltwater. It will ruin your reel stay in freshwater if you want to keep it. And I suggest a MH ugly stik. Very versatile ...more because it will never break even on
    18. JMrock7 0
anyway, thanks for your help! I'll look at exchanging for a mh since I haven't used the rod yet. @TennesseeTroutboy
    19. JMrock7 0
I meant rapala minnows haha. Sorry should have clarified better, and I was thinking about using it for trout when I was using rapalas, but I don't know. @TennesseeTroutboy
    20. TennesseeTroutboy 0
I would recommend it but your M will work, also I wouldn't recommend live minnows and trout fishing on a baitcaster
    21. JMrock7 0
so even if what I am using is still fits the medium boundary, you still would recommend a mh? @TennesseeTroutboy
    22. TennesseeTroutboy 0
Yes and larger lures as well
    23. JMrock7 0
      @TennesseeTroutboy
    24. JMrock7 0
that's what I was thinking, most of the lures I use are within the medium boundary (1/4-3/4 oz), but does that really matter? because wouldn't a mh just ...more be better for pulling fish out of heavy cover?
    25. TennesseeTroutboy 0
      Mh would have been best
    26. JMrock7 0
well actually I found a lightning rod shock for $20 and snagged it. I'm just wondering if I should have got medium or medium heavy. What would you suggest? ...more @TennesseeTroutboy
    27. TennesseeTroutboy 0
      1. Abu Garcia Vengence 6'6 MH $50 2. Berkely Lightning rod 7' MH $40. 3. Duckett Ghost 7' M $100.
    28. TennesseeTroutboy 0
      What's your price range?
    29. JMrock7 0
oh and the fish size expected is about 1-5 lbs

  4. Me and some friends were thinking about camping this weekend, and wanted to know of some places around an hour away from Salt Lake City where we can fish on ice ...more free, or almost ice free water. We also of coarse would like the fishing to be relatively good. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

    1. jake calkin 0
      Yup, good luck.
    2. JMrock7 0
      ok sweet, thanks! @UtahBass
    3. jake calkin 0
It's best for fly fishing though. I don't know how good you'd do with a spinning rod.
    4. jake calkin 0
Weber river near Morgan. The round valley golf course has a campground no more than 20 yards away from the river and there's good fishing all through that little ...more section.
    5. JMrock7 0
yeah they got some big trout! Does anyone know how East Canyon is right now with conditions? @brcats @lhp9 @UtahBass
    6. Lucas Pennington 0
Check out some of @UtahBass catches
    7. Lucas Pennington 0
      Mantua is way to go

  5. Fished with a half (sometimes a full) nightcrawler on a size 10 hook. We began to jerk the worm once it reached the bottom, and sometimes just let it settle at the ...more bottom (which is how we caught this one). I caught around 10 but had many other bites where I missed the hook set. Water was pretty clear at about 4 feet visibility, wind speed 5 mph, water temp in the upper 40's, and partly cloudy.
