      I know 2 visits ago, I caught 1 Bluegill. Last time, it was El Skunko. With the cold snap, today, I'm thinking the fish got lockjaw, so don't fret. This ...more time of year, try fishing any coves or bays you have access to. They'll be following baitfish, and baitfish SHOULD be moving back into the shallowest parts of bays, soon, if not already. Hang in there.

    My oldest daughter just hooked this one. It swallowed the hook to deep. Couldn’t get it out and by time we decided to cut the line I believe it died. Sad.

      Bluegills are so heavily populated that killing one here and there is not such a big deal.....I know that sounds cruel, but that's life sometimes.....Next time ...more keep it for catfish bait...lol

      heidi, if you can get the hemostats on the eye, and push in the opposite direction, you can possibly get the hook out. Hard to say without being there.

      That's why I carry hemostats when I fish for panfish and trout. Allows you to get into those tiny mouths to retrieve a hook. Takes some practice, but most go ...more back, alive.

      Hooks are cheap, just cut the line. Most hooks will dissolve by nature.

      That's what I thought Noah. Makes me sad cause I said give it some water in between of trying to get the hook out and instead He just kept trying. Hope for better ...more circumstances next time.

      Yep, nonetheless if you're gonna release the fish you want to have a net, so you can give it water in between getting the hook out or photos. I only keep my ...more trout out of the water for ten seconds or less but you could probably with bluegills go 20-30.

      They can live a long time out of water. But too long can stress them out and potentially kill them. Think of it as the fish can hold its breath as long as you can ...more hold yours.

      Use long shanked hooks. It makes it easier to get the deep ones out. And if you can't get it out without hurting the fish just cut the line to where it sticks ...more out of its mouth. It can still eat and the hook will rust out in less than a month.

      line prob break 1st but you can set drag to the line test and play the fish out.all just depends where lure is at in fish mouth ya know. ive lots of fish and nice ...more ones on 4lb test.

    Newbie question: Fishing with 8 lb test. So anything large will snap the line then?? Might end up joining something much more than bass.

      It's all in your drag! You can land a huge fish on 4lb test if your drag is set accordingly. As long as they can take line before it breaks, you can land them. ...more May take a little longer, but it CAN be done..... see my post of Musky from last year!

      Not necessarily. You can bring in pretty large fish with 8lb test. The bigger concern is a fish with sharp teeth biting through the line.

    Hope this doesn't sound silly but I'm new at this at 35 years old haha, I haven't fished since my younger days up Tionesta..so What happens if I accidentally ...more end up catching a walleye, Muskie, or Northern pike at Lake Arthur.. they bite right? I don't wanna have to cut a line and leave a fish that way. Don't you need special tools for these types of catches?

      You need jaw spreaders. and forceps they are long needle nose pliers and if u want get some gloves so u don't cut ur hand on the gill plate any fishing store ...more will sell those things and a net makes it easier to handle them
