    Went back home this weekend to do some bass fishing and was not disappointed! Water was 45 degrees and the air temp never got above freezing but the bass didn't ...more care one bit. I lost track of how many fish I caught. No big ones (except for a 4-5 pounder I lost at the boat...) but the insane action made up for it. Can't wait to go back home in a week and do it again, and hopefully get a shot at breaking my PB!

      This lake is weird; all summer long, it can be one of the hardest lakes to fish, but once fall hits the bass are everywhere. Keep fishing man, it will happen!

    With this relatively warm fall we've had, I decided to give kayak fishing one more shot over Thanksgiving break. Ice is forming on all the shallow ponds but ...more the larger, deeper lakes are still open. I stumbled upon the best bass fishing I've had all year; most were small, but I did manage to stick this fat 19 incher on a jerkbait, along with a surprise 26 inch pike. It definitely put my new St. Croix spinning rod to the test!

    I battled the high winds and unseasonably cold weather in my kayak today and managed to find some decent bass action, along with a couple of bonus pike.

    I went out with my kayak today for bass and caught this 2 pounder on my first cast towards some old dock pilings.

      The blade bait I did well with last winter was a Heddon Sonar in the largest size. And I would agree totally on the lipless crankbaits you named being possible pike ...more killers. I wanted to give them a try last winter, but didn't get around to it.

      I've fished Chassel Bay but I've never gone onto the main lake. I've heard that was a good spot to try but I didn't learn about it until the ice ...more was unsafe. For blade baits, do you just go with the larger open water ones? I would think that baits like Rattlin' Rapalas and Clackin' Raps would work as well.

      I had a canoe with me in the summer and fall, so I got around a lot more then. Through the ice I mostly fished the narrows north of Chassell. The dropoffs on both ...more sides of the narrows held pike. I also caught some right in the channel. The 40 inch pike that won the winter carnival tournament this year was caught right in the middle of the channel on one of my tip ups (set by a friend who was fishing with me). I imagine the same weed beds in the main lake that I was catching them from with my canoe would also be worth a try in the winter. For bait, the pike seemed to prefer large suckers under tip ups over golden shiners, dead smelt, and various jigging options. On my tip ups I use 30 lb test tip up line with a home made 20 lb steel leader and a single size 4 or 2 treble hook. I also caught a few nice fish jigging with blade baits. For that I use a Revo S baitcaster spooled with 30 lb Power Pro and a steel leader on a 32 inch heavy action St. Croix jigging rod.

      Hey, thanks a lot for the info! I'd love to give that a shot, but I don't have all the right open water gear yet. Do the pike stay in those same spots over ...more the winter, or do they move to other parts of the lake? And what kind of gear (i.e. tipups, jig rods) do you use to catch them? I know that the line that I'm using on my tipups right now wouldn't be enough to bring one of those through the hole, and I'm looking to upgrade my equipment to catch bigger pike.

      Catching nice pike from Portage Lake is actually more simple than you might think. Find weeds, and you'll find pike. Find weeds with access to deep water and ...more main lake basins, and you'll find big pike. As far as tackle, I caught most of my open water pike on musky sized spinner baits. Don't be afraid to go big. Musky spinners are actually pretty puny compared to some stuff I fish pike with on Bay de Noc. Today the pike didn't want anything to do with those spinners because they were just too small. I had to start throwing a 16 inch Bull Dawg in order to catch fish. For a rod and reel, I use an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur with 80 lb Power Pro and a Musky Innovations Predator Series rod as my primary rig.

Also, if you need any tips about fishing around Houghton, I'll try my best to provide them. Granted, I didn't have time to do as much fishing as I would have liked while I was there, so I don't know a whole lot.

      Oh okay; I graduated from high school in 2014 so last year was my first one at Tech. I didn't do too much in the way of tournaments but I hope to fish a few ...more next year. I hear ya, college really is like having a full time job, it keeps you pretty busy. It is a great group to be in, everyone is really friendly and willing to share knowledge and tips, I'm glad I joined and I'm looking forward to this upcoming year.

      I only went two years to Tech. I was a lot more involved with the club my first year. I went on several trips with the club and even fished a tournament in Copper ...more Harbor. This past year senior design killed me. I would have liked to be more involved, but I just didn't have the time. A couple of guys (mainly Quinten) were pulling for me to run for E-board in my last year, but I knew how busy I was going to be and decided not to. It really is a great club and a great bunch of guys though.
