1. I'm looking to buy a new ice fishing sonar, I want to stay under $400. Does anyone have any ideas?

      Thanks for the help Ty

Gavin, I love my Elite 4x Ice Machine. It does a lot of things the regular flashers can't do, and also flashes (Not as well as the Vexilars) but I spend more ...more time watching the bottom sonar anyways. The regular sonar screen is always spot on and if you buy the regular transducer you can mount it on a kayak no problem.

Tim, I'm not gonna get a flasher because I want something that I can use on my kayak in the summer too.

I like flashers. Mine is a Marcum that I bought about 10 years ago for $299. It has served me very well. I have also used Vexilars and Humminbirds, and they are ...more all great units.

Can't go wrong with a Humminbird. They are newer in the market vs. vexilar & marcum but I think they offer more bang for the $

I was thinking about getting the Lowrance Elite 4x Chirp Ice Machine.

I modified my old boat fish finder (black and white eagle cuda) attached it to a milk crate (which carries stuff in my sled) and put a float on the transducer. ...more It gets the job done very well! lets me see if and where fish are in the column and if they are following it or whatever.

You cant go wrong with a Humminbird or Vexilar in that range. Any other brand I would stay away from...

I have the Vexilar FL-18 and couldnt be happier with it

  5. Anybody got any ideas for finding frozen water?

    1. Tim Steinmetz 0
The U.P. is even worse. There is no ice anywhere. We almost had walkable ice back in November, but it's been so warm this December that everything melted. Looking ...more at the satellite photos I'm seeing mostly open water as far north as Wabakimi in Ontario.
    2. Gavin Weseloh 0
Steve, I live in central MN and all the lakes around me have about 20ft of ice around them but the middle is all open water. I'd say that we won't have ice ...more safe for fishing until early to mid January.😞

Start with a cup and some water. Then put into your freezer for a few hours. Lol!! Maybe near the Wi/MN boarder.

      Gavin/Babe,
I hope you don't mind me jumping in giving my .02 worth. Thought I could help.
Water temperature has risen to the 80’s-90's. Many bass move ...more offshore during summer and fan out over the body of water. These are widely known as “dog days.” Bass will gain some weight and become more aggressive. They will begin to school and chase bait. As the summer continues, the techniques and patterns will change. You will have to figure out where the bass are and play with the various techniques until you figure out what patterns will work. When these changes occur is all dependent on the weather conditions.Bass are going to be in 15 to 30+ feet of water. Fishing for suspended fish likely becomes the name of the game. One pattern that works in this type of circumstance is to slow roll a chatterbait or crankbait in the suspended fish. Slow roll a spinnerbait over the submerged trees (Vertical Structure), occasionally bumping the tree tops, in 30+ feet of water. Top water baits will work on schooling fish and Texas-rigged plastic worms will work on humps and ridges in 15+ feet of water. Your best bet is to fish very early, daylight to 9 or 10:00 o’clock and late in the evening 7:00 o’clock until and after dark.
