1. Hi Gang,
I haven't been fishing that much this past year but lately I've been getting out a lot more. Lately I've been fishing with some buddies from ...more the Hernando Beach Fl. area. Hernando Beach, which doesn't have a beach, is on the West Coast of Florida between Clearwater to the south and Crystal River to the North. I've expanded my knowledge of these areas by fishing north of my town, Hudson, from Hernando Beach to the Chassahowitzka River, Ozello, Homosassa River and Crystal River. It's nice to have friends that invite you to fish with them in this fishing paradise.
Fishing in these areas is dominantly shallow water flats fishing at it's best, though off shore fishing is also great here. But because the shelf on the coast in this area goes out so far, the bottom only drops a foot per mile, the joke here is; if your boat breaks down you can always push it home! Each area is unique in its own way. Each area produces basically the same species of fish, though they yield more of some species than others. For instance, the Homosassa River is a great spot for Mangrove Snapper, Ozello is thick with Red Fish. You can catch your limit of Red's and Mangorve Snapper almost everywhere but those places are a bit better for those fish.
Water temperature and tides are what most anglers depend on here, some anglers swear by the tide, some swear by the moon, barometric pressure is also a factor as it is almost everywhere. There's a thousand theories and superstitions you can find if you ask enough people.
I found that the guides in these areas are superb. They're good old boys who've been fishing these areas since they were old enough to hold a rod and reel. As expected, they know their areas better than anyone. Their prices are very reasonable compared to the high prices guides charge in other parts of the state. We've been catching some mackerel, reds, trout, sheepshead, sea bass, cobia and other species. If you hire a guide, you name the fish, they'll take you to them! Because of the rocky bottom that starts in the Hernando Beach area and goes north, the Grouper come in closer to shore. I've caught keeper grouper within a mile from shore and certain times of year the Grouper come to us! It's all good here on what they call the Nature Coast.
If you're interested in taking a trip to Florida and getting into some of the best flats fishing in the world, take a look at the West Coast of Florida, the best kept secret in fishing. You can contact me and I'll provide you with information on the areas guides, prices, the best time of year to fish here and even the most economical places to stay and eat. I think you'll be surprised to find how economically you can enjoy a world class fishing trip. I'll be happy to help you out with any information you might need to have a terrific time. Emil

  4. Due to some trouble with my back, I haven't been out in quite a while. I finally gave it a tray and I went out with my friend Woody for the day. A front was ...more moving in and we didn't do very well. Woody picked up and nice sea bass. It was still a nice day until the wind picked up. It was good to get back out on the Gulf for a day.

Hi Emil, No not too crowded. there were boats around the flats but not as many near the mangroves. Have you been able to get out?
  5. We had just anchored off of a point where the Little Granny Creek meets a cut- threw to the Gulf of Mexico. Little Granny Creek is a small creek that is the channel ...more into Westport, Florida. Even at high tide a boat that draws more than 18 inches of water can get stuck in there when the tide quickly changes. You have to get there a little before high tide and get out before its too late to make it back to the Gulf. We were anchored in the cut-threw, the bow of the boat was facing Little Granny. The tide just started to go out, so we knew we only had a limited time to fish there or we'd be there for the next 6 hours or more. Mangroves line the banks of the creek and the cut-threw and small pools and cuts along the banks are where trout and red fish cruise. I flipped a live shrimp on a # 3 circle hook over the grassy point near the mangroves into Little Granny. I used a small splitshot placed about 16 inches from my hook to help keep the shrimp on the bottom because of the slightly strong currant at the point and to let the shrimp bounce off the bottom. Almost at once I felt my rod bend like a piece of spaghetti and I felt the weight of a large fish on! The guys with me immediately yelled, "shark on!" When I started to reel in, my first thought it was a shark, then, from experience, I knew it was a red fish, and a big one by the way my rod was bent and the way the fish was fighting and moving. The fish made a run around the point for Little Granny Creek to make the turn toward the mangroves. We were anchored in the cut-threw and I had to maneuver this hog back toward the boat if I was going to land him. He thrashed into the edge of the mangroves so I lowered the end of my rod to the water and pulled as hard as I could to keep him from going into the creek to use the mangroves on the point to cut my line as I tried to reel my Penn SS4300 for all It was worth. My 7 foot medium heavy action Tsunami rod bent and held him on the point. It seemed like hours but it was only several minutes when he started to tire a bit but the hog still had enough left to make a run in the other direction up the creek. I began to reel a bit harder, stopping to adjust my drag to get more out of the Penn reel, I finally had him coming to me. He wasn't going to give up easily though, when he saw the boat he made one more powerful run for the creek but by this time he was mine Finally he lay on his side next to the boat, tired from literally, the fight of his life. He was only 6.5 pounds but what a warrior! If I hadn't been able to move him off of the point, he would have surely used the mangroves to cut my line and get away. He was a smart fish and used all of his instincts to fight me. We boated him with a net and I gave thanks for the meal my wife and I enjoyed that night for dinner. It was battle with a fish that I won't soon forget.

Red fish with a Live shrimp

  6. Had a good day in Long Granny area. Plenty of trout and reds.
Last few weeks of July. Outgoing and incoming tides. The rain cooled the water temp down to 82 degrees. ...more The trout were lively and the reds were also biting well. Small pin fish and shrimp. Pin fish worked best on both species. It seems that if the water stays cooler the reds bite much better. With all the rain we've had it should stay good as long as the water stays cooler.
Outside, the fishing was poor in the last week of July. Made one trip at the end of the month to a hole about 15 miles out. Two of the guys got sick from the heat and the fishing was poor, only one keeper red grouper and a few grunts. Moved around but it was still poor fishing.

Hi David, I was out on Saturday the 15th and the water temp was only between 64 and 66. We saw a boat land a nice snook but that was it. Through the years, I've ...more found that if the water temp hasn't held 68 degrees for about a week or so, I was wasting my time out there. Once that temp holds at 68 consistantly, the fish will start to bite. There was a tournament in Hudson and only one boat brought in 3 trout, that shows how bad the bite is right now. This rain isn't helping to keep the temp up either. But it's going to get beeter any time now. Keep the faith David!

Actually you can see the reds tail all along the shoreline against the mangroves. The area I was refering to was the area just north of Brasher Park . But in the ...more mornings I find these reds almost any where on the shoreline against the mangroves. Those little cuts or creeks that go into the mangroves are the best places.

About

Retired and enjoying fishing in Florida. My wife and I enjoy fishing as often as time allows. She still works, so I fish more on my own or with ...more friends. Before coming to Florida I lived in New Jersey. My buddy and I fished every mud puddle, cranberry bog lakes, rivers. We fished from the Hudson River by the GW bridge and down to surf fish the Jersey coast and on to the Eastern Shore of Virginia at Capeville. to the Bay Bridge Tunnel and places in between. We also fished the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays. I've been an avid fisherman for 59 years and have fished all kind of venues. It's the best time I've spent in my life. There's nothing like spending the day with my wife and our friends on the water. It's not always about how many fish you catch or how big the fish is, it's about the fun and the comradeship and enjoying the day. Miriam and I moved to Florida because the weather allows us to fish more months of the year here on the Gulf of Mexico.
