The Walleye fishing is overlooked here. Weeds are key. A lot of weedy bays and bars makes for a good muskie lake. Smallmouth offers great action.

I know many of you are anxious about opener as it regards to water conditions and ice for opening weekend. To put you all at ease I will be posting an additional ...more report in the middle of the week so you can plan accordingly. The good news is that the rivers are really flowing. The Chief River has melted a lot of ice deep into Musky Bay. Moss Creek and Hay Creek are continuing to fill up nicely and ice is nonexistent in the creek bed areas in those respective creeks. Over by Deerfoot Lodge and the Landing, ice is still present, however, the ice is getting very soggy and slushy which suggests the full thaw is close. In those same areas the shorelines are completely thawed up to about 10-20 feet out. The Chip is continuously filling up from all the run off from the creeks and rivers. I do not want to guarantee anything yet as Mother Nature has a tendency of getting a little funky around this time of year. The weather forecast for the following week suggests it will be in the 50s all week long while rising to the 60s come opening weekend. We are also looking at possibly 4 days of rain this week which will chew up the ice and slush nicely. Finally, according to the Fisheries Biologist up here, the water levels are coming up as expected and about 2.64 inches of water are being added to the Chip daily. At that rate, come opener the lake will be close to full summer pool. The Fisheries Biologist is confident that the ice will be out for opener and locals report there is significantly less ice than last year. Stay tuned on Tuesday or Wednesday for an update.
