Very cold morning at Calvert Cliffs Pond but plenty of trout. Took most of the fish on a fly rod and bead head nymph.
I spent four hours on Monday 1/22/18 on St Mary’s Lake in Saint Mary’s County fishing the cold water. Air temps were in the low 60s and water temperature was 37.7 ...more degrees. Looking for suspended fish in deep water about 100 yards west of the dam. I found them at 17 to 18 feet hanging on the edge, that leads down to the old river bed which drops to 20+ feet. I caught the fish using a 1/4 oz jig dressed with a 6 inch green plastic worm. I would row out past the drop off and let the wind drift my kayak back over the fish. Just barely shaking the lure as it dragged the bottom. The fish all tapped the bate aggressively and put up a good fight. I started to lose the sun but I am sure I would have caught more fish. I landed a grass pickerel that measured 14 inches and two largemouth bass one 15 inches and the second 13 inches. Fun day on the lake, rain tomorrow but what the heck. I’m heading back out!!
