A section of the Kiskiminetas River in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
First time fishing on the Kiski in preparation for an upcoming tournament. This was the biggest of 12 smallmouths. I also caught a walleye. There were quite a few ...more dinks, but six of my fish would have measured. The five best fish would have totaled 72 inches. I will need some bigger fish in two weeks, but it was a good start, and I learned a lot on my first float here. Big thanks to Neill and Evelyn at the River’s Edge for making this one-person float possible with their shuttle service (and a lot of good information about the Kiski!).
After tossing the Whopper Plopper all day, I decided to throw something else. Was getting close to lunch, and I was tired from paddling upstream all day, so I started ...more to drift back. This little Sauger nailed it, then came off. I saw him turn back toward the bait, find it, and lunge at it. I didn't even have to reel in. Just lifted and swung him in.
Right after releasing the toad, I hooked into this little one. I would pull about 2 more dinks out of this same spot, before the bite dried up.
Cast up toward shore, and the lure never even made it back onto the surface. Hooked into what looked like a 3 pounder....and then lost it at the boat. Very next ...more cast, about 6 feet upstream, and hooked into this toad. My PB smallie, to date.
