Topaz Canal Fishing Reports

Recently shared catches and fishing spots

  1. Gave up jigging and tossed a night crawler into the current. Not huge but a good size for the smoker.

1 lb. 8 oz. Rainbow Trout with a night crawler

Disclaimer: NOT 24 inches. This app is struggling....
  2. Jigging with spoons and castmasters. After 9 or 10 carp, I finally snagged this smallmouth in the pectoral fin... barely. Getting it in was a delicate proceedure ...more between not losing the barely hooked fish, and not falling on my ass trying to climb down to net it.

2 lb. 8 oz. Smallmouth Bass with a spoon

Oh yeah, carp are definitely in the canal. I've seen some that are massive in both the lake and the canal. Right now they're crowding around the outlet from ...more the lake. The trout and bass get big in there (we've landed several in the 4 to 5 lb range-- posted on here), but by far, the biggest fish I've caught in the canal was a carp. I have no idea what it weighed because, like a dumbass, I dropped it while trying to get it out of the water. Snapped my line and swam off with my lure in its back. Only the head would fit inside my net, which normally fits those 5 pounders I mentioned, no problem. Snagged him by chance in the dorsal fin so it was quite a fight too! Too bad they're not much good for eating... and that I dropped the damn thing!

Carp in Topaz canal? I wasn't aware of that. I know there are some monster carp in Topaz lake; caught em in summer while bank fishing for trout. Shoulda known ...more they'd be in the canal. Maybe all those 'big trout' I've been seeing for years at the pipe outlet ain't trout!? My brother lived at Topaz till recently, I have to ask him if he's caught carp. You wouldn't think bass would live where the water gets so cold in winter either, but I see other Sierra lakes have bass as well. Don't know how recent bass are, but never heard about them till about 10 years ago. But a LOT of my old Sierra fishing holes have changed big time in the last 50 years...

No idea why the app is showing a length of 40.0 for this fish.

  3. I must have arrived at just the right moment, because I landed this guy plus nine smallmouth bass over the course of about 2.5 to 3 hours this afternoon. They were ...more hitting everything I threw at them. Once in a great while, through not but sheer luck, everything clicks. For the record, I only kept the legal limit of 5 bass.

3 lb. Brown Trout with a Rapala countdown minnow

  4. Weight is not precise. My scale only shows even pounds. Call it three and some change. Hard fighter for a trout!

3 lb. 3 oz. Brown Trout with a Rapala countdown minnow

  5. Brought in a few roughly the same size as this one the same morning. About a fish per hour on average, so far this season. More than enough to keep me interested! ...more Very slow retrive with a constant jerking motion, so the line is just barely slacked between tugs. Makes the lure snap back and forth from side to side as it inches through the water. The trout and bass can't stand it!

2 lb. 14 in. Rainbow Trout with a Rapala countdown minnow

  6. Same spot. Same lure. Same size as the last few. Definitely not complaining.

    3 lb. Rainbow Trout

  7. 3 lb. 14 in. Smallmouth Bass

  8. 1 lb, 2.5 lbs, and 3 lbs respectively. Water level is up, current is flowing again, and the fish are biting. Landed these three in about 3 hours. Time to fill the ...more freezer and get the smoker fired up!

3 lb. Rainbow Trout with a Rapala countdown

  9. The normal spot was taken, as was the second choice, so I went further down to a spot that rarely produces action. Tried with a Rapala for a while to no avail, ...more switched to straight night crawlers and let the current drag them along the bottom. An hour later, I've got myself four rainbows. Complaints? Who me? Never.

I haven't caught one in a long time either, but I'm sure they are still around. I was fishing in the summer then. It's the only time I caught them. ...more I don't fish Topaz in the summer anymore since then. One carp was 12lb, the other was over 20lb!!
I was fishing on the west side at the popular drive down spot. Using red worms. To my knowledge they've never 'killed' off the lake, so I bet they're still there.

I didn't know there was carp in Topaz. That's no good at all. Haven't caught one yet, thankfully.

      Nice!

I wonder why California Fish and Game kinda 'gave up' on Topaz? They used to do a lot of planting, I remember when they tried some HUGE brown trout plants ...more back in the 60's and 70's.. Then they placed the little tag boxes at various places. When those went away, we heard nothing. I think CDFW plants Topaz once per year. Thanks to NDOW for keeping at it. No trout will reproduce successfully as long as they have those big CARP in the lake, I've seen them eat the minnows by the bucketful..

Upon further inspection, Topaz lake is the most heavily stocked lake in the western region of Nevada. 16,298 rainbow trout so far this year. They put 2007 browns ...more in the canal back in June of 2017.
    6. Skip Benedict 0
Yes, I believe they stock browns in the canal... or did last year. I'll have to look it up.
    7. Norman Gibbs 0
Have fished Topaz for years, but not much in the Canal till my brother moved up there... Usually good fishing if you are kinda stealthy. I think that NDOW even ...more plants the canal...??
