Compressed panfishlike body. Small mouth with incisor-like teeth. Distinctive black spot behind the gill cover. Body is bluish-silver, going to silver beneath. Six vague darker vertical bars exist on sides, along with blue and orange-yellow horizontal stripes. All fins are yellowish.
