Lake Wilhelm Fishing Reports

  1. It was the tale of two tournaments and two fish at Lake Wilhelm. Saturday, I fished the third AOY tournament for Kayak Anglers of Western PA. It was a slow bite, ...more but I was on a good pattern in the stumps. The bites were few, but when they bit, they were good size. I ended up one bass short of my limit. I lost what looked to be about a 17” bass on my first bite, when I broke off with brand new line. If I would have landed that fish, I would have finished in second. Later in the morning, I lost a giant, easily 19” and perhaps bigger. It too broke off. That fish was a tournament winner. It was right by the boat, and I had my net in hand. I should have been using heavier line. To add insult to injury, I would have likely finished the season in the top-five for Angler of the Year with a first or a second at Wilhelm. I was thinking about what could have been all day. I ended up in 21st place out of 56 anglers. I was headed up to Erie to pre-fish for another tournament, but I decided to make a bee-line for a local tackle shop to refill my reels with stronger line. I registered for the third tournament of PA BASS Nation, which was the following morning on the same, Lake Wilhelm, hoping for some redemption from Saturday’s result. I fished the same pattern—fewer bites with quality over quantity. It worked. I caught six fish all day, but they were good size. I finished with 90”, which put me in a tie for first. The tie-breaker was biggest fish, and my 21.25”, 5 lb 5 oz giant was the kicker that won the tournament. On Saturday, I lost the big one that would have won me the tournament; on Sunday, I landed the the big one. I cashed a check for 1st place out of 18 anglers and a second check for big bass.

It was, but the grass is starting to take over. I didn't have to many clean casts. Most every one I had to clean grass off of what I threw.

  7. 6.0 in. Largemouth Bass with a Rapala Jointed Deep Husky Jerk

Yep...it was the only bite I got in nearly 5 hrs. Why was this little fish so aggressive when the others could not be enticed to bite or strike. The water is still ...more pretty warm (72F).

When they hit lures as big as them, you gotta wonder " what are they thinking"?

  9. Good morning bite, but the action died down once the sun came out. On the water for four hours. Still figuring this place out. This one was the highlight of the ...more day at almost 3 1/2 lbs.

Thanks Frank, have to write that one of my list ! Maybe we will meet up some day at Moraine and talk !
    3. Frank Yamada 0
Ted, the channel is there. The weeds are choking up the water up to about 1-2 ft. of the surface even in the channel.

      Very nice Frank!

Frank, thanks for the info. I've been thinking about that place for awhile. There used to be a decent channel going through there which I fished.
    6. Frank Yamada 0
Jim, bite has been slow, at least the couple of times I’ve been there. Ted, the upper part of the lake is almost completely choked off with weeds (and very, very ...more shallow).
    7. Ted Gerle 0
Nice fish ! I haven't fished there in many years, but the upper no motor section was always good for me.
    8. Jim Leise 0
I haven't made it up there yet this year. I haven't had much luck up there the last couple years I went, and heard the bite was still slow. Used to be ...more one of my favorite places to go, glad you got some going!
    9. Rob C 0
Nice! Big lake; lots to figure out. We’re hoping to get up there soon.
